Poems are a very important part of funeral or memorial services.  Poems help to comfort family and friends, and help family and friends express their feelings about their deceased loved one.  Funeral poems can be used during the funeral or memorial service, committal ceremony, or ashes scattering ceremony. They are also used in funeral printed materials, such as funeral programs, funeral program templates,  prayer cards and bookmarks.

There are several sources for finding the right funeral poem for your funeral service or funeral program, or printed materials.  The internet is a great resource for finding the right poem to remember your loved one.  There are many sites that list poems for free.  These poems are  categorized according to relationships, including poems for mothers, fathers, children, grandmothers, grandfathers.  They also categorize funeral poems for specific illnesses and circumstances of death.  Most websites will list the authors of the poems, if  known.  You should always list the author's name when using poems in printed materials, ensure that proper credit is given to the author.  There are also several e-books that have funeral poems available for download for a nominal fee.

The right funeral program can enhance your funeral or memorial service and give it that extra special touch.  These tips will help you to select a memorial or funeral program template that captures your loved ones personality.  The right design coupled with the perfect funeral poem, prayer or scripture will make your funeral program special.

1. Select a design that best represents your loved ones personality, such as a simple, straight-forward, conservative (subtle shades of softer colors, such as pink and lavender) or wild and adventurous (splashes of red, purple, and orange).

2. Find the right funeral poem, funeral reading, or song (lyrics) that offers consolation to you or meant a lot to your loved one?  Consider using personalized letters and notes in the funeral program.

3.  Include a photo of your loved one.   Decide if you want a recent photo, or  an older photograph such as a photo from a wedding, from high school, or the military

4. Consider using  family photos (photo collages) in the funeral program

5. List information about  special life events (e.g. graduations, marriages, military service/awards, jobs, volunteer service, and retirement)

6. Include an obituary in the funeral program.

A funeral program (sometime referred to as a memorial service bulletin or memorial program) is a printed document (or booklet) that is distributed at a funeral or memorial service.   A funeral program helps the guests follow the funeral service, and serves as a keepsake to remember the deceased.

Parts of Funeral Program…

The Cover

  • Photos of Deceased
  • A descriptive title of the Funeral Program such as “In Remebrance” or “Celebrating Life”
  • Location; Date; Time; Name of Service Leader
  • Birth Date and Death Date

Order of Service
The Order of Service serves as a guide to the funeral service.  Below is an example of a traditional funeral Order of Service.  Funerals or Memorials can follow any format, and can be tailored to fit your loved ones wishes, however, if you are planning a traditional service, particularly if the service is in a church, you should get guidance about the service from the pastor of other church officials.

  • Prelude – anything that serves as a preceding event or introduces the events that follow; Ex. Instrumental Song, Poem, Choir, Solo Singer
  • Procession – Group Entrance (usually family and immediate family) into a ceremony or service
  • Prayer Moment of Silence (Remembrance)
  • Reading (Scriptural, Poem, favorite excerpt)
  • Hymn /  Song of Comfort
  • Acknowledgments (family members, hospice, community members)
  • Obituary Reading (Sometimes the funeral program states that the audience should read silently in order to save time).
  • Eulogy/Tributes
  • Benediction/Closing -  Short invocation for divine help, blessing and guidance, usually at the end of a service
  • Recessional (Song/ Procession or “exiting” of the service)

Obituary
An obituary is a notice or announcement, of a person’s death, to include an account of their life.  Obituaries are an important part of the funeral program and are the last words written about the deceased’s  life.  For more information, see  "How to Write An Obituary".

Funeral Poems
Poems are used in funeral programs to bring comfort to the grieving, or to help celebrate the life of the deceased.

Eulogies/Tributes
Eulogies, tributes and funeral poems can be included to help personalize the program.
